Currently, UW research and Sponsored Program's policies address these concerns. UW faculty cannot sign a contract that gives any commercial sponsor control over data generated. Sponsors additionally cannot ask to approve results, hold publication, or modify papers written. The can write a contract requesting research by a principle investigator (PI) to focus on an issue of interest to them, but the funding cannot be tied to a particular result. Consulting relationships between a PI who has been on a sponsor's grant must be monitored by a committee to watch for abuses.

All this has been set up to prevent corruption that has historically tainted science. It is one thing that UW has been very good about.

Nevertheless, pervasive nationwide pressure to secure outside research funding from corporations poses a threat to good scientific practice. All institutions should be free to research in accordance with good ethics.

With corporate funding of research, “there’s no scientist who comes out of this unscathed.”
